Osborne Clarke recognised for role in developing the new LexisCheck legal document checker

London, 9 November, 2009 – LexisNexis congratulates development partner Osborne Clarke for its ‘Stand-out’ commendation in the Client Services category at the FT Innovative Lawyers Awards. The commendation, which recognises excellence and innovation, was conferred for Osborne Clarke’s contribution to the development of LexisCheck, the new legal document citation checker from LexisNexis.

Built in conjunction with Osborne Clarke, who helped to develop the various elements from concept through to product delivery, the software acts as a ‘spell-check’ for legal citations. Scanning through Word documents it then displays, with a traffic light signal, whether a citation is ‘reliable’, ‘questionable’ or ‘unreliable’ and provides links to full details of the relevant law and practice guidance. This process provides a more efficient way of checking documents, helping to mitigate the risk of inaccuracies in client advice.

Craig Jones, Osborne Clarke’s Client Knowledge Services Manager, said: “Our firm is honoured to receive recognition from the FT. Our work in co-developing LexisCheck was extremely important to the firm and demonstrates just one of the many ways we are committed to driving innovation across the practice to make sure we remain competitive and deliver our clients the best possible service.”

In its working partnership with LexisNexis, Osborne Clarke discovered that 90% of the time spent checking legal citations was dedicated to simply finding them and checking their current status.  LexisCheck is capable of accelerating this task, delivering significant time savings by automatically validating the legal references in documents to ensure they have not been superseded by later judgments or legislation, highlighting and directly linking to LexisLibrary references for citations that require review in newly drafted documents, archived client files and web content.

“Recognition of Osborne Clarke’s contribution in developing this cutting edge piece of legal technology by the FT Innovative Lawyers Awards is well deserved and we are of course delighted that LexisCheck has been highlighted as a key tool in providing excellent client service. Partnering with innovative customers such as Osborne Clarke is essential in ensuring we develop new offerings with lawyers, for lawyers.” commented Jon Brewer, Director of Practitioner Solutions, LexisNexis.

In October LexisNexis also launched LexisCheck for students, enabling them to also benefit from this time saving tool, and helping them to achieve a better quality of work. Well over 1000 law students downloaded the product within the first month.
