Umbrella originated as a part of a LexisNexis® African Ancestry Network & LexisNexis® Rule of Law Foundation Fellowship project.

We believe that intellectual property pushes the country forward in art, technology, medicine, and more. It is what makes us competitive and unique on the world stage and in our communities.

The foundation of intellectual property law is a person’s rights to their creations, inventions, and innovations. However, systemic racism, in the form of a lack of resources, discriminatory classifications, and blatant exclusion and theft of intellectual property, limits access to those rights by black and
brown people in America.

Our mission is to create transparency around federal intellectual property law that combats systemic racism impacting artists and entrepreneurs.

This platform is designed to improve the relationship between black and brown creators and their intellectual property.

Zuri Ward is a 2022 LexisNexis® African Ancestry Network & LexisNexis® Rule of Law Foundation Fellow and introduced Umbrella as a part of her fellowship project. Zuri Ward is an evening law student at North Carolina Central University School of Law.
