Steven Farmer

Steven Farmer is a Counsel in the London office and is a member of the law firm's Intellectual Property/IT, Data Privacy and Marketing Law teams. He is also a member of the Global Sourcing practice. Mr Farmer focuses his practice on both contentious and non-contentious intellectual property, commercial contract negotiation and drafting, data protection, advertising and commercial issues. His data protection experience also includes advising on requirements and compliance in the pre-incident environment and he has lectured on such issues. He also represents clients in regulatory and legal proceedings with a data protection angle. He has significant experience advising global companies on the use of cloud technologies and the international transfer of data, particularly extra-EEA transfers utilizing model contract clauses and binding corporate rules. Mr Farmer is also currently working towards obtaining Certified Information Privacy Professional (Europe) (CIPP/E) and Certified Information Program Manager (CIPM) status. On the intellectual property side, Mr Farmer has completed both the prestigious Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice and the ITMA Certificate in Trade Mark Law and Practice. He has advised on copyright and trademark licensing and infringement issues, patent licensing and infringement claims and passing off. Other contentious experience includes advising on privacy claims and defamation matters (claimant and defendant). Mr Farmer also has substantial trade mark filing and prosecution experience of UK, CTM and international applications. On the marketing law front, Mr Farmer advises on product launches, service and product claims, the purchase/sale of customer lists, ASA complaints and investigations, comparative advertising issues and clearance of advertisements, ensuring compliance with direct marketing codes and prize competition regulations. Recent experience includes advising on a landmark ASA ruling on online and comparative advertising. He also advises on the data protection issues associated with digital marketing campaigns.
