Jean Meijer

Jean Meijer is a partner in the firm's competition practice and serves on the firm's partnership board. Jean handles all aspects of competition law, including merger control, cartel and other prohibited practice investigations, exemption applications and competition compliance. She has knowledge of the competition laws of many African countries and regularly advises on multi-jurisdictional African mergers. She has acted in many of the high profile South African competition cases including for: the bidder in the first successful hostile takeover since the Competition Act came into effect; a major bank in the enquiry into competition in banking; a major oil company in its successful opposition to a merger between its competitors; the complainant in the first excessive pricing case decided by the Competition Tribunal; the leading Supreme Court of Appeal case on the interpretation of the per se prohibition on price fixing. She is described in Chambers and Partners as "one of the pre-eminent competition lawyers in South Africa". She "is truly excellent and understands our business really well."
