Ian McEwan

Ian is a Partner in the Property Disputes team in Royds Withy King’s London office. He helps landlords, tenants, property owners and developers to resolve their property-related disputes.
 
Having trained at a leading City law firm, Ian has specialised in property disputes since qualifying as a solicitor in 2008. He advises on a wide range of issues, including the disputes that arise between landlords and tenants on a day-to-day basis regarding the management and occupation of large investment property portfolios.
 
Ian acts for institutional landlords, developers, commercial tenants and individuals. His particular areas of expertise include:
  • opposed and unopposed lease renewals
  • disputes regarding the payment of rent and service charges
  • issues regarding break notices
  • forfeiture and possession claims
  • applications for consent to assign or underlet
  • issues regarding disrepair, reinstatement and other breaches
  • removal of trespassers
  • property-related insolvency issues
  • disputes between neighbouring landowners regarding rights of way, boundaries and restrictive covenants.
 
Ian's work highlights include:
  • obtaining injunctions in the High Court to prevent a development in Central London from trespassing against his client's land and to stop it from interfering with his client's right of way
  • helping a prominent charity to defend the largest dilapidations claim brought in its history, which was subsequently settled via mediation
  • opposing various lease renewals under section 30(1)(f) of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 to help a PLC clear a large mixed use site in Manchester for redevelopment.
