Application for listing definition

What does Application for listing mean?

An 'application for listing' refers to the application made to the competent authority (the FCA as the case may be) as is required by the listing rules under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000.

The competent authority will grant admission to the official only on an application made to it in such a manner as may be required by the listing rules, Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 s 75(1). For a definition of the 'listing rules' see Halsbury's Laws of England, Financial Services and Institutions Vol 48 (2008) 5th Edition PARA 385 note 18. The competent authority may assess an application for listing only if it is made by or with the consent of the issuer of the securities. It may not entertain an application for listing of securities which are to be issued by prescribed bodies, Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 s 75(3).
