Brownfield land definition

What does Brownfield land mean?

Land that is or was occupied by a permanent structure; the opposite of greenfield or virgin land.

Brownfield land is defined in Planning Policy Statement 3 as 'land that is or was occupied by a permanent structure, including the curtilage of the developed land and any associated fixed surface infrastructure'. The definition excludes: land and buildings that are currently in use for agricultural or forestry purposes; land in built-up areas which has not been previously developed; land that was previously developed but where the remains of any structure or activity have blended into the landscape in the process of time.
