Free school definition

What does Free school mean?

A (non-statutory) category of state-funded 'independent school', i.e. an academy school.

Free Schools are in law ''academies', founded or operated under the Academies Act 2010, but Free Schools are new schools and tend to be parent- or teacher-led, whereas the other academies tend to be led by government or by a local authority or a sponsor, often replacing a closing school.
