GLOSSARY

Part-time worker definition

What does Part-time worker mean?

A category of worker whose hours and days of work are less than a full time worker.

Part-time work is now very common in the work environment, particularly for employees returning from maternity leave or who have responsibilities as carers and who wish to work reduced hours. Part-time workers are protected from less favourable treatment by employers under the Part-time Workers (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2000, SI 2000/1551 (as amended). These Regulations ensure fair treatment for part-time workers, particularly with regard to a fair pro rata principle of pay and benefits when compared to full time workers.
