This maxim is used to reject an argument for deciding a case in a particular way simply because such a decision would have undesirable consequences in other cases.The component parts of the maxim are sometimes reversed, producing fiat justitia, ruat coelum (which is then translated as 'let justice be done though the heavens fall'). The maxim is particularly useful when resisting 'floodgates' arguments.
