Dubai ruler issues new DIFC Courts law establishing Mediation Centre

The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Courts will operate under new Law No. (2) of 2025, issued by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The law establishes a Mediation Centre for alternative dispute resolution, defines the courts' jurisdictional scope over civil, commercial and labour claims and outlines frameworks for judicial appointments. It replaces DIFC Laws No. (10) and (12) of 2004, while maintaining existing regulations that do not conflict with the new provisions. The law grants exclusive jurisdiction to DIFC Courts over cases involving DIFC bodies and institutions.

VIAC announces Vienna Arbitration Days conference

The Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC) has announced the Vienna Arbitration Days conference for 9-10 May 2025, in conjuction with the centre's 50th anniversary. The conference, themed ‘Orchestrating Efficiency in Arbitration’, will examine established and innovative approaches to arbitral proceedings. The event aims to address efficiency in complex dispute resolution through examining the interaction between parties, counsel, arbitrators and institutions. The conference is supported by multiple organisations including the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) European Branch and the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA).

PCA signs cooperation agreement with Brazilian federal court for dispute resolution

The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) has entered into a Cooperation Agreement with Brazil's Federal Court of the Second Region (TRF2) on 6 March 2025. The agreement establishes a framework for facilitating PCA operations in Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro states, while promoting alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. The agreement also supports implementation of the PCA-Brazil Host Country Agreement which entered into force on 8 January 2025. The signing ceremony took place at the Peace Palace in The Hague with representatives from both institutions present.

Hong Kong—court orders stay of court proceedings in dispute involving non-signatory to arbitration agreement (Techteryx Ltd v Legacy Trust Company Ltd)

Arbitration analysis: the Hong Kong Court of First Instance granted a stay of Hong Kong court proceedings in favour of Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) arbitration. In the decision, the Honourable Madam Justice Mimmie Chan (Judge) considered that the requirements for a stay of proceedings under section 20 of the Arbitration Ordinance (Cap. 609) had been satisfied, as there was a prima facie case that the non-signatory defendant concerned was entitled to rely on the relevant arbitration agreements on the basis of the principles of agency and equitable estoppel under Delaware law, which was the governing law of the arbitration agreements.
