Stop Scams UK members pledge cross-sector fraud prevention collaboration

Stop Scams UK members have published a joint statement highlighting their united effort to combat fraud through collaboration, intelligence sharing, and innovative solutions. Fraud currently accounts for 41% of all crime in England and Wales. Leading companies from the technology, telecoms, and financial sectors have pledged to work together to protect consumers, build confidence, and drive economic growth. The initiative focuses on sharing intelligence, resources, and developing actionable communication strategies to safeguard consumers from evolving scam threats. The National Crime Agency and Lord Hanson, the Fraud Minister, emphasise the importance of public-private partnerships to disrupt scammers and protect the public.

Home Office lays eight draft Investigatory Powers Act codes before Parliament

The Home Office has laid eight new and updated draft codes of practice under the Investigatory Powers Act before Parliament. The codes cover bulk personal datasets, equipment interference, communications data, intelligence services' data usage, interception of communications, notices regime and bulk data acquisition. These comprehensive updates to investigatory powers regulations will come into force following completion of the parliamentary process. The codes provide detailed guidance across 49-178 pages on various aspects of investigative capabilities and data handling.

DEFRA announces enforcement details for June single-use vapes ban

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has urged retailers to deplete their single-use vape stocks before the 1 June 2025 sales ban deadline. After this date, businesses cannot sell remaining stock and must ensure safe disposal. In England, non-compliance will result in a £200 initial fine and product seizure by Trading Standards, with potential unlimited fines or prosecution for subsequent breaches. The announcement aims to help businesses prepare for the implementation of legislation laid in parliament last year.

MoJ to legislate against Sentencing Council's guidelines on pre-sentence reports

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has announced that it will introduce the Sentencing Guidelines (Pre-sentence Reports) Bill to prevent new Sentencing Council guidelines from taking effect. The legislation aims to block provisions that would create different approaches to pre-sentence reports based on race, culture or religion. The Bill follows formal objections raised by the Lord Chancellor to the Sentencing Council and will apply to England and Wales. The government is seeking expedited parliamentary passage to ensure the guidelines do not come into force.
