DESNZ announces plans to consult on space heating product standards

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has published a summary of proposals aimed at improving product standards for space and combination heaters. These proposals seek to update ecodesign and energy labelling legislation to facilitate heat electrification, reduce fossil fuel consumption, ensure legislative effectiveness, and improve energy labels. DESNZ intends to launch a consultation on these proposals by the end of 2024, once the draft statutory instrument is ready for publication.

Ofgem announces energy price cap increase for Quarter 1 of 2025

Ofgem has announced a 1.2% increase in the energy price cap for the first quarter of 2025, covering 1 January to 31 March 2025, setting the new cap at £1,738 annually for an average household paying by Direct Debit for dual fuel. This represents a £21 increase per year but remains 10% (£190) cheaper than the cap for January-March 2024 (£1,928) and 57.2% (£2,321) below the peak during the 2023 energy crisis. Ofgem also highlighted increased market competition, with 1.5 million households switching tariffs over the past three months and eight suppliers offering rates at least 10% below the cap.

OEUK publishes offshore wind decommissioning guidelines

Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) has published its first set of guidelines for decommissioning offshore wind turbines. The guidelines provide an overview of relevant regulations and best practices for technical design and environmental protection measures. Key considerations include cost-effective methods, workforce safety, and environmental impact assessments. They also emphasise the importance of monitoring seabed changes throughout a turbine's lifespan and integrating decommissioning planning into the design of new turbines.
