This Overview provides a summary of the content available on the implications of the UK's departure from the EU and IP completion day on subjects covered by Local Government, together with links to related guidance and policy documents.

Following a national referendum, the UK withdrew its membership from the EU on 31 January 2020. The EU and UK domestic legal landscape has continued to change throughout the withdrawal process, transition/implementation period and beyond.

IP completion day

11 pm (GMT) on 31 December 2020 marked the end of the Brexit transition/implementation period entered into following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. At this point in time (referred to in UK law as ‘IP completion day’), key transitional arrangements came to an end and significant changes took effect across the UK’s legal regime.
