This Practice Note considers the rules and authorities governing personal service of the claim form. The relevant civil procedure rule is cpr 6.5. The Practice Note considers when it is a mandatory requirement to use personal service and when it might be possible to use personal service where it is not a mandatory requirement. It sets out the rules for personal service when seeking to effect service on an individual, a corporation or a partnership. It also considers different scenarios in which difficulties may be encountered in seeking to effect personal service.

The provisions on personal service were, prior to CPR 6.5(3), set out in the Rules of the Supreme Court, Order 65 r 2. While the authorities as to the application of the provisions in the RSC are no longer authoritative, they may still be persuasive, see for example: Chopra v Bank of Singapore (2015).
