EU AI Office launches repository of AI literacy practices for AI Act

The European Commission's EU AI Office has created a living repository of AI literacy practices to support the implementation of Article 4 of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 (AI Act), which came into effect on 2 February 2025. The repository compiles examples from AI Pact organisations, categorising them by implementation status. Whilst not guaranteeing compliance, the initiative aims to foster learning and exchange among AI providers and deployers. The EU AI Office emphasises that this forms part of its broader efforts to support Article 4 implementation, with further developments to be discussed in an upcoming webinar.

Commission proposes toolbox for safe, sustainable e-commerce

The European Commission has proposed a comprehensive Communication on E-Commerce, outlining actions in seven key areas to address challenges from the surge in low-value imports. These include customs reforms to remove the €150 duty exemption and consider a handling fee; enforcing consumer protection through the Digital Services Act and General Product Safety Regulation; launching coordinated controls and product safety sweeps; implementing digital tools like the Digital Product Passport and AI for non-compliant product detection; adopting environmental measures such as the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation; empowering consumers through awareness campaigns; and enhancing international cooperation on product safety and trade practices. The Commission aims to create a safer, more sustainable, and fairer e-commerce market within the EU.

Commission issues Guidelines on prohibited AI practices under AI Act

The European Commission has published Guidelines on prohibited artificial intelligence practices as defined by Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 (AI Act). These non-binding guidelines aim to ensure consistent application of the Act across the EU by providing legal explanations and practical examples of unacceptable AI practices. The document covers areas such as harmful manipulation, social scoring, and real-time remote biometric identification. Whilst approved, the guidelines await formal adoption and emphasise that authoritative interpretations remain the purview of the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Commission opens consultation on Technology Transfer Block Exemption Regulation

The European Commission has initiated a comprehensive review of Regulation (EU) 316/2014, the Technology Transfer Block Exemption Regulation (TTBER) and accompanying Guidelines. The Commission has completed the evaluation phase in November 2024, which included public consultations, a stakeholder workshop, and a support study. It has now entered the impact assessment phase, with a call for evidence and public consultation open until 25 April 2025. The review aims to determine whether to let the TTBER expire on 30 April 2026, extend it, or amend it. This process is crucial for companies involved in technology transfer agreements within the EU.
